Frequently Asked Questions

1) Where is a good place to find info on my eMachine?

The ultimate place is eMachine Upgraders: http://s8.zetaboards.com/emachineupgraders/index/.

2) Can I disable that annoying eMachines splash screen during bootup?

On some of the older eTower and eMonsters you can't, but you can bypass it by pressing the <tab> key on eTowers or the <esc> key on the eSlate when the splash screen appears. Some of the newer models in the CMOS settings. This option is usually in Advanced BIOS Features.

3) How do I access my CMOS settings?

Usually by hitting the <del> or <F2> key at the emachine splash screen will get you into the cmos settings in MOST eTowers or the <F2> with the eSlate.

4) Where can I purchase an emachine motherboard replacement?

You can go here http://parts.emachines.com/emachines/, but be prepared to shell out mega$$$. Another option is to try on-line auctions such as ebay, pricewatch.com, etc.

5) Can I put any Micro-ATX motherboard in my eMachine case?

Depends on what case you have and what motherboard you want to use. Check out this page for details on how to put a non-OEM mobo in an e-case.

6) Is updating my BIOS safe?

NO. A bad BIOS flash can kill a perfectly good working motherboard.

7) I want to upgrade my BIOS any ways but the file seems to be written in a foreign language [garbled text], what’s up with that?

Trigem motherboards are built in Korea, by Koreans, who speak Korean. The files will work if you know what you are doing. If you don’t know what you are doing, THEN DO NOT ATTEMPT IT!

8) I didn't listen to you and updated my BIOS any ways, now I’m having all kinds of problems…what do I do now?

If you didn't save your old BIOS file and can't find someone who has the same file, Refer to faq #4.

9) Can I disable-enable the on-board video?

Yes. Refer to the jumper settings below.

10) Yeah, all that crap in those tables above didn't help....Now how can I disable my Intel 82810 on-board video?

To disable the onboard video, it must be done in device manager in windows. It is disabled in system devices not in display adapters. Both of these two categories are listed in the device manager screen. You must click on the category system devices to open it up, once done it shows a lot of different items. The one you would be looking for to disable the onboard video is 82810 system and graphics controller. Highlight it so it is blue, click properties. Another screen will open up revealing two possible selections. Uncheck exists in all hardware profiles, check disable in this hardware profile, click ok, exit, unplug, install video card connect your monitor to it, reboot, let windows install generic drivers to get your new card going. What trips a lot of people up in this procedure is that there are two categories in device manager that look all most identical. The first one is under display adapters, Intel(R) 82810 graphics controller, you don't use this category selection. You must scroll down in device manager until you are near the bottom and then click on system devices. You will then find a listing that includes Intel 82810 system and graphics controller. Click properties, check, and uncheck boxes. The first selection I mentioned, Intel(R) 82810 graphics controller only has
one check box, and is listed in under display adapters and can't disable the onboard graphics.----PC

or in simple terms:

My computer>
control panel>
device manager>
system devices>
highlight Intel 82810 system and graphics controller>
properties>
uncheck exists in all hardware profiles>
check disable>
click ok>
exit and shut down, unplug. Install video card, reboot. Windows
will install it's generic drivers. Later use your disc to install
specific drivers for card.

(Thanks to PC for this info)

11) I lost/don't have the restore disk...what are my options?

If you are going to own a computer you need a FULL VERSION operating system and not some half-ass "restore disk". You can get a full version of Win98SE or XP off eBay for about HALF price. You'll find all the drivers you need here at this site.

12) What kind of SDRAM memory do I need for my older eTower/eMonster eMachine?

It usually doesn't matter whether is PC 100 or 133 (some of the newer PC133 is NOT backward compatible with PC100, so make sure that it is) CAS 2, 2.5 or 3, just make sure it is 'Low Density, Double Sided'!!!

Here are some known working manufacturer/part numbers for 256Mb sticks:

Infineon HYS64V32220GU-7.5
Kingston KVR100X64C2/256
Kingston KVR-PC133/256 (not KVR-PC133/256-R)
Kingston KVR133X64C3/256 ==>
Kingston has updated this number so it is no longer low density; Use number below
Kingston KVR133X64C3Q/256
Kingston KTD-OPGX1N/256
Kingston KTC6611/256
Crucial CT32M64S4D8E
Crucial CT16M64S4D7E.16T
Mushkin 990614
Toshiba THMY6432G1EG-80

13) UK support numbers?

Hardware: +44 (0) 870 901 3000. (Calls charged at national rate)
Software: +44 (0) 906 559 7897. (Calls charged at 75p per minute)

14) The motherboard in my system is different than the one you have listed for my model. Some sockets or ports are left off and the bios files don't seem to work. What's the deal?

The specs listed in the motherboard sections are based on RETAIL versions. Nearly all eMachine motherboards are "OEM" variants of the retail versions, meaning no support from the manufacturer. Use the specs as a guide.

15) What is the eModels naming scheme all about?

A Series
The A26EV17F is currently the only A series system, which was designed for Circuit City.

C Series
Designed for Costco retailer.

D Series
Designed for Office Depot retailer.

H Series

16) I just finished a restore and it boots to a blank page when it is loading windows. What's up with that?

You may need to enable VGA mode. To do so you need to go to the advanced options menu by pressing F8 on boot up and selecting enable VGA mode.

17) Why is my Second Generation Western Digital Serial ATA hard drive not detected by my First Generation Serial ATA controller or motherboard?

Answer:
Second Generation Serial ATA hard drives are not detected when connected to a VIA or SIS Serial ATA controller. These First Generation Serial ATA controllers include the following chipsets:
VT8237
VT8237R
VT6420
VT6421L

SIS760
SIS964

Cause:
Western Digital's Second Generation Serial ATA hard drives use autospeed negotiation. This enables our Second Generation Serial ATA hard drives to automatically detect the motherboard data transfer rate, making it backward compatible with First Generation Serial ATA data transfer rates. However, because this technology is so new, some older First Generation Serial ATA controllers are unable to support autospeed negotiation and cannot recognize the drive. This “drive not detected” condition occurs when a chipset is incapable of correctly negotiating the data transfer speed with a Second Generation Serial ATA hard drive.

Resolution:
You can purchase and install a third party PCI or PCI-Express Second Generation Serial ATA controller card for your Serial ATA hard drive(s).

To lock the drive at 150 MB/s data transfer rate, install a jumper shunt on pins OPT1, shown in the picture below.

If the OPT1 jumper setting does not resolve the issue, please contact Western Digital Support for further troubleshooting.

OPT1 Enabled:

18) Be sure to check out the "End User's Upgrades" section for your specific motherboard/system.
