512 MB on a T1090

Just thought I would post that SiSandra reports that the maximum memory installable into a T1090 is 512 MB. The manual and advertisements claim a max of 256 (which is what I have installed.)
The T1090 has a Cognac+ motherboard, which has 2 DIMM slots.
Hope that helps someone.

Powerleap CPU Upgrade

02.06.02

Just to let you know that it can be done...I just upgraded the CPU on my Trigem Cognac mb from a Celeron 466MHz to a PIII 1.1GHz (100MHz FSB)! The Celeron was a PPGA, so I bought a PPGA-to-FCPGA converter from www.powerleap.com ($25) and it works great. My system is an HP Brio, but we share the Cognac MB. Also, no BIOS or voltage problems.
The board details are as follows:

Mat. NO:109931 COGNAC 19990723
S/N (3)302891-0317217

My BIOS is Phoenix version IL.27.00(QIL.00.08),
but my BIOS Rom chip is labeled:

COGNAC+
(BX).6
V00.08

The install was too easy.
Before I manually cleared the CMOS, the BIOS read the chip as a 'PentiumIII 750MHz'. I figure the board hadn't switched from 66MHz FSB to 100MHz FSB, but it switched without a problem afterward. Which is good, since there are almost no jumpers on the whole board.
The operating system is Win98SE and I haven't tested it with anything too nasty, but I had it on for hours while I tinkered with it.
I also verified the speed with SANDRA and a diag. program I downloaded from Powerleap.

P-3 1.1Ghz Upgrade

09.14.02

To update: I have installed a 1100mhz Pentium III, 100mhz fsb on my T1090. It seems to be working great. It is PGA 370 which I bought from Compuvest.com. They have it listed as a PGA2 but it is not. Intel's web site indicates they only made the 1100mhz with a 100 fsb in the pga 370 package-not PGA2. It is clear this is not a PGA2 because it has a much smaller cpu core, as described on Intel's web site-- check out s-Spec Number SL5QW. It's a core voltage is 1.75 like the Celeron, 900 mhz. Hope someone finds this useful.

Double-sided RAM is the Secret

11.03.02

OK, here's the deal. After attempting to upgrade memory, I just finally got a 256 MB RAM upgrade to work on my T1090 (cognac+ MB). I learned that the trick is to get DOUBLE-SIDED, cas latency 2 SDRAM. My experience suggests that 133MHz RAM does not cause a conflict even though MB is rated at 100 MHz.

I have 2 DOUBLE-SIDED sticks of Crucial 256MB 133MHz CL2 in mine [Cognac+] and it is running with no problems at all. I didn't do anything special to make it work. I didn't realize that there were any issues. That's 512MB of memory and its cheap nowadays. My buddy threw an extra stick of Crucial 128MB 133MHz CL2 in his machine and had no problems either.
Good luck.

Disabling On-board Video

01.15.03

I just installed a video card under XP Pro SP1. I mainly used the steps previously identified but did a few different things:

1) First, I changed the display to 600x800
2) Went to control panel
3) System
4) Hardware Tab
5) Clicked on the device manager button
6) expanded system devices (at the bottom)
7) highlighted 82810 System and Graphics Controller
8) Right clicked, selected properties,
9) Since there is no option to disable or remove, I chose uninstall
10) While still in device manager, I went back up to Display Adapters
11) Highlighted 82810 Graphics Controller
12) Right click, select properties
13) Chose the option to disable
14) It prompted to reboot, I chose NO, turned off PC
15) Inserted new card, hooked monitor to new card, and everything
came up just fine.

Now, the card I just installed is a pretty low end card - nVIDIA TNT2 32 MB. It is a PCI card. I have a 633is emachine and have no AGP slot.

I did try to install a couple of different Radeons and a higher end Geforce and was unsuccessful. However, I did not try the exact steps I described above.

Did this card work because it is compatible with my 633is setup? Or is the trick to uninstall and disable in both sections within device manager under XP???

Installing Video Card

05.15.03

Here's what I did on my T1090 (Win XP):

1) Install new PCI card, but leave monitor plugged into motherboard
2) Boot up
3) Go into BIOS
4) Change Primary Monitor to PCI (from AGP)
5) Save and Exit
6) Shut Down via power switch
7) Switch monitor cable to new video PCI card
8) Restart
9) Disable (but don't remove) device drivers in Device Manager. You
will end up with a red X through the device picture--it's ok. If you
acquire a second monitor, you can re-enable the on-board video and use
dual monitors.

3 PCI Slots on the Cognac+?!

08.22.03

If you have ever looked at the Cognac+ the bottom PCI socket it "missing" but it can be added and be fully functional. All the traces are active and functional. Go over to www.digikey.com and get part #145154-4 or 145154-8...either one will work and solder it in.
