From 2.0 to 2.4Ghz
Just a quick note to
inform you that I've just upgraded an emachines 570 (I
live in the UK) 2Ghz Celeron 128L2/400FSB Trigem
Imperial motherboard to a P4 2.4Ghz 512L2/400FSB.
Apparently Trigem Imperials support the 533FSB but I did
not want to chance it, hope this is of some value to you
and keep up the good work.

I attempted to install a
P4 2.4 ghz 533 FSB [S-spec SL6Q8]. Evidently the
Imperial[-GL] motherboard does not support the 533 FSB.

HP Imperial CPU
Upgrade
1.30.04
I have a HP Pavilion
with the Trigem Imperial GLVE board. [Upgraded] the
processor on it from a 2.0GHz [to a] 2.7GHz Celeron
processor (478 Pin 128KB Cache 400MHz. FSB 1.525V). The
board is running the Phoenix Bios 3.24 that was with the
2.0GHz. It has an 845GL chipset. Every thing seems to be
working alright. You can sure tell the difference.

Imperial 845GV Mobo
& 2.8GHZ 533FSB P4
02.14.04
I have an eMachines T2692, with a TriGem Imperial 845GV
Mobo. Tonight I upgraded the ram from 256meg to 1gig.
And I swapped out the original 2.6ghz celeron cpu for a
2.8ghz 533FSB P4. It's all working flawlessly (it's been
running for about ten hours now with every test I can
think of to throw at it). No bios adjustments are
needed, just a simple swap. It couldn't have been easier
to do and it makes a huge difference. With the original
configuration, using the onboard video, 3DMark2001 was
1100+ and now it's 2100+. A full system scan using
Norton Antivirus took over twenty minutes before and now
it takes just over twelve. Everything else is opening
and running faster.

Killer Upgrades on
the Imperial-GV! (T-2682)
02.03.05
-upgraded the stock
5400rpm hard drive to a 7200rpm WD hard drive first -
significant improvement in all-around performance
-upgraded stock 256mb PC2100 ram to 1gb PC2700 ram
(2x512mb), system recognized it without a problem and
speed seemed improved a fair bit
-upgraded to 3.06gHz processor with matching fan & heat
sink (and Artcic Silver 5 heatsink compound), system
recognized it immediately and bios gave option to enable
hyperthreading - which I did and then confirmed it was
working by checking the hardware manager and verifying
that it showed 2- 3.06gHz processors.
The sSpec of the processor I installed is SL6PG, but
SL6QC should also work based on the Intel product specs
and the other 533fsb 3.06 processors may work too.
Cannot promise this as my processor has the D1 stepping
(as does the SL6QC) whereas the others in the group have
the C1 stepping.
Keep in mind that you cannot use a Prescott core based
processor with these motherboards. The SL6PG and SL6QC
are Northwood core based (0.13 micron).
-installed the ATI Radeon 9200SE video card - works well
(wish there was an AGP slot...); downloaded Catalyst
software/drivers from ATI website and everything seems
happy.
-installed the soundblaster live! card and CRASH!!! -
not the fault of the hardware - appeared the driver for
the sound card disagreed with something my son had
previously downloaded. Ended up re-installing Windows XP
from the cd's that came with the computer and everything
played nicely after that.
Speed is considerably improved - seems very close to my
Dell 3.0gHz 800fsb machine, although on intensive 3D
games (Doom3, Halo, UT2004, etc) it is noticeably slower
but very playable (before there was no way it could hope
to run those!).

Mobo Upgrade
08.30.05
Got an ASUS P4BGV-MX MB for $25 as a replacement for the
original T2692/Imperial GL MB. This has virtually
identical specs/chipsets as the original. Even the front
panel audio and USB connectors connect right up the way
they should.
Stuck my Celeron 2.6 CPU in there, and everything fired
right up.
System asked me to activate.
Plugged in my LAN cable and went into activation process
and ... no joy. Said I could not connect to an
activation server. Checked my LAN connection - got link
lights. Checked IPCONFIG, gave me an error. Hmmm??? Read
on MICROSOFT web site that this error could be caused by
having BIOS time way off. Checked, and mine was somehow
set for 2002. Changed it to 2005, and off we go again.
This time ... no joy. Got further than before, but was
told my product key was no good. I checked the product
key displayed on the screen with the COA on the back of
the unit, and they were totally different. Input the one
from the back of the unit (on the COA), and ... JOY!
Activation was completed, and the unit runs fine with
this replacement MB. The only thing I had to install was
a new AC'97 driver for audio.
So, I don't know if the system will restore off of the
eMachines Restore disks or not (didn't need to reinstall
since my existing hard drive was OK). I imagine not. But
what you can do is use any other
(non-restore-type-disks) OEM XP installation disks to
install your XP. Then go to activate Windows, then
change the Product Key, then input your eMachines
product key. It should go fine from here.
My saga is ended, at least for now. I am happy my Video
Production PC is back up and running. Hope this helps
others who may need to go down this road. Remember, if
your hard drive is good, and only your MB or CPU is bad,
buy this ASUS MB (or another with very similar specs,
like the Intel mentioned above, just get one that
works). You MUST have the Nortbridge and Southbridge
chips the same, the video chip the same, and the LAN
controller the same in order to reduce risk of
activation failure or blue screen of death problems.

T2542 CPU Upgrade
11.17.05
Well I replaced my 2.8 ghz with a 3.06 ghz Hyperthreaded
processor and it works flawlessly (I think, more on that
later). I put in the SL6S5 version. Just a note to
others considering the upgrade . . . the following
hyperthreaded processors are available for your T2542
(or same Imperial IM845GV motherboard).
SL6SM
SL6S5
SL6K7
SL6JJ
There are a couple other 3.06/478 processors, put they
have a different CPUID string and they are NOT
HyperThreaded.
Unfortunately, I was so anxious to get the processor in,
that I neglected to run comprehensive benchmarks on the
non-HT processor first so I could compare apples to
oranges. It doesn't seem significantly faster than the
non-HT processor, though it does seem to perform more
CONSISTENTLY (fewer brief slowdowns with multiple apps).
I suppose the real value is that now I don't have to
waste time wondering what my 'puter would be like with a
faster processor.

T2682 Mobo Upgrade
02.03.06
Someone gave me a 2682
with a failed power supply that took out the motherboard
(as I suspect is the case with most "dead" or "won't
boot" problems. I replaced it with an MSI 845GVM-V. I
also replaced the power supply with a used one I had on
the shelf. I moved the CPU and memory over and fired it
up. It of course asked me to validate WinXP and did so
by doing a complete restore with the restore disks and
then activated XP by using the modem that I had
transferred too. I then uninstalled the Sound driver as
it was incorrect for this motherboard. I shut down and
then restarted it and XP asked for the new driver which
I fed it and everything is back to normal. I had
searched for days and saw some very high prices for the
motherboard that was OEM if it was even available. One
brought over $200 last week on ebay: yeah just the
board!! Anyway after looking and comparing lots of
boards I got this one on ebay for 30 and all is back
good now. The MSI845GVM-V was an 845 chipset with the
same Realtek NIC and Audio but the original Sound driver
would not work. All of the cables plugged in the same so
no problem there. Be sure to get one with an I/O shield
as they are different. All of the holes line up with the
case. Another post or two said what board they used in
this scenario but most never returned to say about the
restore disks and re-activation. I did use dial up for
the activation NOT the call them on the phone
activation.

T2240 Mobo Upgrade
01.17.07 I just got my
replacement board [PC CHIPS M963GV (V5.0) Socket 478 SiS
661GX ] for my eMachines T2240 that got killed by the
cpu. I didn't even have to reinstall XP at all! All I
did when I put the hard drives back in for the first
time was boot in safe mode and let XP install all the
needed drivers for the new components and stuff. Then I
double check to see if I needed to uninstall anything
from the old pc manually (like the video card) but I
didn't have to. I then
took this opportunity to finally put to use my beautiful
ATI 9600xt that I bought over a year ago but couldn't
get to work. I bought it for my T3302 but the Via
chipset was incompatibility with the ATI card and never
got it to work. That's why I intentionally bought this
mobo that had an sis chipset and not via. the card
worked PERFECTLY. I put away my old pci vid card,
install all the necessary drivers for anything that
needed them and bam, done.

Imperial-GV Mobo
Upgrade
02.09.07
I just replaced the
mobo in my T2692 with the ASRock P4i65G and the Celeron
2.6 Ghz cpu wasn't fried so it's in the new board along
with a new power supply and RAM. I reloaded the restore
cds and then did a repair install with a WIn XP HOme cd
and it worked great, activated with no questions asked.
(Maybe they were out to lunch or something)

Audio Help
4.26.08
Read this if you're switching out a dead
i845-chipset motherboard with Avance/Realtek AC'97
audio for a different board that has similar
hardware, and sound won't work when you try to
continue using the old Windows XP installation.
There are no apparent Windows configuration
problems; no devices have yellow exclamation points,
there are no service errors, and nothing is amiss in
the Windows registry. But, sound just doesn't work!
I ran into trouble with an eMachine T2240 when
replacing its dead Trigem Imperial GL_VE motherboard
with an Imperial GV board. I was trying to just
drop in the new board without repair-installing or
"system-recovering" Windows XP. Everything worked
perfectly, except sound. After countless hours of
troubleshooting, I found the problem: the old
Avance(now Realtek) AC'97 audio driver. Just
uninstalling it and installing a current Realtek
driver isn't enough to bring back sound. After
uninstalling the old driver and before you install a
newer Realtek driver, you must navigate to the
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS directory and delete the
file called ALCXINIT.DAT. Once that's deleted, you
can install a newer driver, and sound will work,
again.
