Another Mobo Upgrade
I just replaced a FIC AU31 M/B with an MSI K7MNF-64.
Now before we begin with the 333/400FSB
issue........when I first initialized the PC I booted
into safe mode.
This gave the OS a chance to delete the unnecessary
hardware and install the new hardware (Yes, WINXP will
install new hardware in safe mode). Then I booted into
normal mode and was told that this copy of WINXP had to
be authenticated
before continuing. I hooked a phone line to the modem
and clicked yes. It dialed into MS and they sent back
some weird number so I deleted it and installed the
Serial Key on the back of the PC and it then
authenticated. (However, beginning 1 March 2005, the
Product Key supplied on a label by the computer
manufacturer, and used for the initial installation,
will not be accepted for activation.) Note the date of
this post!
The only things that were changed were the MB and the
PSU. All else was the same.
Did not try the recovery discs but assume they will
work. But I think the online authentication process
still works as long as that number has not been
authenticated before. I used the 333FSB board because
the AU31 was not available and because
he wanted the PC fixed ASAP and as cheaply as possible.
I then tweaked the software as much as possible to my
ability and he said he really couldn't tell the
difference between the speed of the two boards.
